What Medicare Means to You

MDSBlogger • August 9, 2013

What does Medicare mean to you? Medicare is a great form of insurance that lets you choose your health and prescription drug coverage.  With over 10 different plans to suit your needs, Medicare can definitely assist with your medical needs.

Most people tend to confuse Medicare with Medicaid, but there really is a difference.  Medicaid is a state-run program, that varies from state to state, that provides medical coverage for people with low income or little to no health resources.  Some people may qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid.

Medicare unfortunately doesn’t cover every medical expense.  Medicare doesn’t cover cosmetic surgery, health care outside of the United States, hearing aids, nursing homes, eye glasses or dental care.

There are many Medicare Plans and it can be overwhelming.

When you turn 65 years old, you are automatically enrolled in Medicare, if you’re getting Social Security benefits.  A Medicare insurance card will be mailed out three months before you turn 65. If you are not receiving Social Security benefits, you will have to apply for Medicare. If you or someone you know happens to be on disability from Social Security for at least two years, Medicare will help.

How do you enroll or sign up? The Social Security Administration (SSA) takes care of enrolling people in Medicare.  The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) administers Medicare.  Choosing the right Medicare plan is something to think carefully about. Don’t make an impulse decision when picking one. Co-payments and deductibles are included in some of the plans, be sure to ask.

Keep in mind that August 21 st is the National Senior Citizens day.  This day promotes health and well-being with our older citizens in our communities. Consider volunteering at a nursing home or spend time with family on this great national holiday.

If you have any Medicare or Medicaid questions or concerns, feel free to contact one of our Medical Department Store staff members to walk you through how Medicare and Medicaid works.
