Senior Citizen Driving Tips

MDSBlogger • August 7, 2013

If you’re not fit to drive, consider asking a friend or family member to get you around town.

Some people have will have to give up the independence and ability to drive because of a medical condition or because of age so it’s always wise to practice smart driving when you’re older to insure you get to your destination safe and sound.  By the time you are a senior citizen, you have been driving a lot of miles and you have a more relaxed driving style. Medical Department Store wants to provide some tips to help you drive a little safer.

You may need to improve your driving style by making a couple little changes to be a better driver when you’re older.  Weigh out the pros and cons of driving during the day versus driving at night. See what works for you and plan your entire trip ahead of time. This will help you keep track of where you need to go.  Make sure to check your local weather forecast to determine what the conditions of the roads will be or if there is any road construction or detours, based on where you’re located.

Never mix alcohol or medications with driving. If you feel lightheaded, don’t drive and call someone to escort you where you need to go.  Alcohol and certain prescription medications can impair your reaction time, thinking and driving.  Make sure to read to medications carefully.  Some medications specifically state not to operate machinery or to drive a car. Consider asking your doctor about the side effects of your prescribed medicines and how it could affect your driving.

Most of all, before you drive, make sure your car is ready to go.  From basics like if there is fuel in the car and if the tires are inflated to making sure the oil is at the recommended level and your exterior lights work.  These little things will help keep you going instead of being broken down on the side of the road.

Medical Department Store hopes these tips will help you the next time you get in your vehicle. Consider looking at our diabetic supplies and urological supplies.  Please contact us with any questions.
